BRYN MAWR, Pa. – The Bryn Mawr College lacrosse team kicked-off their 2013 campaign with a decisive 15-3 win over visiting PSU-Abington Friday afternoon on a cold and windy Applebee Field.
Senior Melina Higgins scored her first goal of season only 1:36 into the game. Junior Kathleen Magner added a pair of goals at 15:48 and 13:30, before Higgins went between the pipes at 12:09. Bryn Mawr had control of the game as they held a 4-0 lead.
Penn State-Abington got on the board at 11:24 with a goal from Tori Kimberly, but 20-seconds later, it was Manger tallying her third goal of the game to regain the four-goal advantage. During a span of just over four minutes, Higgins and Magner added to their goal totals by scoring two goals each.
Holding an eight-goal lead, The Lion's scored another goal before the end of the half with Kate Schalck notching her first goal of the season at 1:27. Both team battled over the final minutes of the half, but it was Bryn Mawr who held a 9-2 lead heading into halftime.
The Owls opened the second-half by scoring five goals by four different players. Freshmen Georgina Dominique (28:34), Aviva Kosansky (24:30) and Claire Johnson each record their firth intercollegiate goal. Johnson netted a pair of goals just less than two minute apart at 19:54 and 18:03.
PSU-Abington's Nichole Hayes scored her team's only goal of the second half at 14:37.
In addition to her one goal, Dwyer led the Owls with a pair of assists as Higgins and Kosansky handed out one each.
Earning her first collegiate victory in the net, sophomore Grace Baelen-King posted seven saves on 21 shots.
This is the third year in a row that the Owls have started their season off with a win over PSU-Abington. In 2011, the Owls rolled to a 17-4 while in 2012 they earned a 17-5 victory.
Bryn Mawr is back to action on Saturday, March 9, when they travel to Rosemont for a 1:00 pm contest with the Ravens.
