Lacrosse Suffers First Setback of the Season
BRYN MAWR, Pa. – The Bryn Mawr College lacrosse team suffered their first loss of the 2013 season as visiting Sweet Briar College downed the Owls 19-6 Thursday afternoon on Applebee Field in non-league action.
The Vixens jumped out to an early 6-0 lead behind a pair of goals from Olivia Hart. Sophomore Ashton Dwyer got the Owls on the scoreboard with her first of goals on the day seven and a half minutes into the start of the game. Her second goal came nearly twelve minutes later when she took a pass from senior Melina Higgins and beat Sweet Briars goalie Caroline Baker low.
After seven straight goals from SBC, freshman Claire Johnson netted her fourth goal of the season with help from junior Kathleen Magner twelve seconds before the end of the half. The Vixens held a 13-3 lead at the half.
Sweet Briar opened the second by posting four goals over the opening 13 minutes. Bryn Mawr recorded back-to-back goals from freshman Georgina Dominique and Magner four minutes apart at 17:17 and 21:20, respectively.
SBC added two more goals in the final minute of the game. Their goals were separated by Magner's second tally on the game with 44-seconds remaining.
Dominique and Magner led the Owls with four groundballs while Johnson scooped-up three. Magner posted a game-high 12 draw controls while sophomore Tanya Hamid and senior Kelsey Harris caused two turnovers each.
Hart led Sweet Briar with six goals and one assist. Eight different vixens recorded goals while six were awarded assists.
Bryn Mawr is back to action when they travel to McDaniel to open Centennial Conference play on Saturday, March 16, for a 3:00 pm contest with the Green Terror.
