BRYN MAWR, Pa. – After a dominant display at Bryn Athyn earlier this week, the Bryn Mawr Owls volleyball team continued their momentum Thursday evening, sweeping the St. Elizabeth Eagles 3-0 (25-16, 25-19, 25-15), picking up their first home win since September 24, 2018. Nicole Wood had yet another impressive showing with 14 kills, while Sydney Collins led the team with 18 assists. The team now moves to 2-3 this season.
The Eagles showed a strong fight in the first set, going toe-to-toe with the Owls for the first couple points, but as Zoe Boxill stepped up to serve for the Owls, so did momentum as Bryn Mawr earned five unanswered points. Despite a valiant effort from the St. Elizabeth team to forge a comeback, the Owls continued to hold the lead, extending to a set-high lead of 11 points at 20-9. With kills from Wood and Boxill along with back-to-back errors from the Eagles, Bryn Mawr took the first set, 25-16.
The Owls looked to keep the momentum going into the second set but faced another back-and-forth contest from the Eagles in the first few points. St. Elizabeth's would take the early lead at 5-4 and hoped to maintain the competitive edge, however a resilient effort from Bryn Mawr quickly allowed the team to move on top of the set and reach 12-9. The Eagles showed no sign of giving up as they powered back to stay in the game, bringing heat to the Owls, with four kills and multiple points off errors. Junior Sydney Munnerlyn proved to be the difference maker of the set as she assumed the server position near the end of the set and picked up two aces. With match point on the line, Wood landed a monster kill to end the set, her ninth of the game, moving the Owls to 2-0.
With the advantage on their side, Bryn Mawr opened the third set with a quick point of their own before St. Elizabeth once again brought the heat, fighting for a fourth set. The Eagles took an early lead, but it was short lived after an ace from Boxill moved the Owls to 6-5. Bryn Mawr would maintain the lead the rest of the set, despite a strong fight from St. Elizabeth, picking up eight kills from Wood, Boxill and Aaliyah Joseph and numerous aces from Collins, Boxill and Munnerlyn, one of which sealed the victory and earned the Owls their first sweep of the season.
The team looks to continue their two-game win streak tomorrow, Friday, September 10, as they travel to Delaware Valley to face Rosemont and Delaware Valley at 6:00 PM and 8:00 PM respectively.
