Volleyball Shutout at Gwynedd Mercy

Sydney Collins Action Shot vs. St. Elizabeth

GWYNEDD VALLEY, Pa. – The Bryn Mawr volleyball team faced its second-to-last non-conference opponent of the 2021 season Thursday night as they took on the Gwynedd Mercy Griffins. While the Owls fought back to keep the match going in the third set, the Griffins proved to be the stronger team as the Owls fell 3-0. Nicole Wood led with six kills while Sydney Collins picked up seven assists. The Owls are now 5-5 this season going into a slew of Centennial Conference play.

Gwynedd Mercy came out looking dominant as ever, claiming the first six points of the set to take an early lead in the first set. They extended the lead 9-1, but Bryn Mawr looked to turn the tide as the Owls went on a four-point run to close in by four. The Griffins responded with a four-point run of their own, looking rock solid with no intention to give up their substantial lead. Head coach Hayley Kirby took a timeout with the score at 21-12, hoping to settle the Owls' composure and bounce back in the set, but the Griffins would pick up their final four points off attack errors to close the first set and win 25-14.

The second set saw another quick lead by Gwynedd Mercy as they rose the score to an eight-point lead at 11-3. A Bryn Mawr timeout was called again, but this time coming out of the timeout, the Owls showed some fight, with kills from Wood and Zoe Boxill, along with three attack errors. With the score at 16-7, a back-and-forth melee ensued as both teams fought to claim victory of the second set. While the Owls looked to have found their rhythm and slowly began to climb the scoreboard, Gwynedd Mercy's Aybria Purnell ended the second set, 25-15, with a powerful kill to put the Griffins up 2-0.

With the Griffins up by two and the third set possibly being the decision maker, it was all or nothing for the Owls. The set was off to a competitive start as Bryn Mawr remained neck-in-neck with the Griffins, going 3-3 to kick off the set. While Gwynedd Mercy looked to find the opportunity to run away with the lead, they would only claim seven of the next 13 points as Bryn Mawr bought the head and began to shift momentum. The Griffins went on a five-point run to move to 14-9 before returning to a balanced fight with the Owls who showed determination to win the third set. Bryn Mawr won seven of the last 12 points, but it was not enough as Gwynedd Mercy would take the third and final set, sweeping the Owls.

Up next for the Owls is their first conference match of the season. They take to the road to face Gettysburg this Saturday with gametime slated for 1:00 PM.
