Volleyball Puts Up Strong Fight At Gettysburg

Sydney Munnerlyn fall 2021

GETTYSBURG, Pa. - The Owls volleyball squad kicked off their Centennial Conference slate earlier Saturday with a road trip to Gettysburg College. Despite a strong effort from the Owls, the team ultimately came up short in their first league matchup of the season, falling by a 3-0 scoreline to the Bullets. Nicole Wood led the team with eight kills on the day while Sydney Munnerlyn and Zoe Boxill added three more each.

Gettysburg got off to a fast start in the opening set, running out to a 10-3 lead and never really looking back. The Bullets won 10 of the next 11 points to pull ahead 20-5, and despite a couple kills from Wood and another from Munnerlyn in the set, the hosts ultimately won the first frame handily. The second set was a similar story, as Bryn Mawr managed to keep it a little closer early on, but Gettysburg used a big run midway through the frame to take a 20-10 lead. Munnerlyn tallied another kill and then Thandie Eversley threw down a big ace, but it wasn't enough to help the Owls claw back.

In the final set, Gettysburg once again stretched out to a large 17-4 advantage, but Bryn Mawr did an admirable job battling back into the frame. Wood got a couple more kills and then Sydney Collins added another, and that helped Bryn Mawr draw back within ten. A little later, the Owls would win nine straight points, including back-to-back kills from Boxill and another ace by Eversley, forcing Gettysburg into a timeout. However, with the Owls now trailing just 23-19, it was the Bullets who managed to do just enough to win the next two points and eke out the set, thereby claiming the 3-0 (25-8, 25-15, 25-20) win on the day.

Bryn Mawr will be right back in action on Saturday night when they host crosstown rivals Haverford in the Class of 1958 Gymnasium. Gametime for that match is set for 7:00 PM.
